Wetsuits
Wetsuits are probably not the first things that you think of in terms of surfing apparel, but in the modern surfing world, they are often necessary. In times past, surfers would throw on a pair of shorts and hit the beach, but this is often not an acceptable route to go from a safety standpoint. Some of the best waves in the world are in water that is inhabited by jellyfish. The less of your body that you expose to stings, the safer you are.
That danger seems menacing, but is actually less probable than hypothermia. Sunshine and blue waves are well and good, but even the summer sea is a bit on the chilly side, and if you surf in fall or spring, odds are the weather is not going to cooperate with your desire to hit the waves. That’s where a wetsuit really comes in handy. The suits trap a layer of warm water against your body, insulating you from the chill of the ocean, this is where the true value of the suit lies.
That is because wetsuits are designed for warmth, rather than for jellyfish protection. The second is an accidental benefit. It’s nice to have, but by no means is it something they’re looking to optimize a suit for. Understanding that is key to finding the wetsuit that will work best for you.
