Surf Equipment
Surf equipment can be a very simple investment for an amateur surfer, but professionals sink a mind-boggling amount of resources into their equipment. The basics are easy: you just need a board and a tether. The tether attaches to your ankle, and makes sure that your board doesn’t get swept out to sea if you eat it on a wave.
What you’re wearing, whether it be a bikini or a set of board shorts, doesn’t really qualify as surf equipment. So for basic surfing, the board and ether is just about it, however if you get into wind surfing, kite boarding, or other variants of the sport, you’ll find that your equipment list quickly grows.
For a wind surfer, you need to have at least two sails, along with the mast, boom, and rigging to go along with them. The larger sail is used for light wind conditions, where it might be difficult or impossible to plane without the surface area. The smaller sail is used in higher wind conditions, to keep your craft on the water and improve your handling. For kite boarding, the same conditions apply to purchasing different sized kites.
